In 2017, the internet was flooded with erotic toys, sex toys, and other fetish toys that sold for upwards of $30 each.
But it wasn’t until a few years later, when a handful of niche fetish brands started popping up, that the fetish market began to explode.
And those fetish brands quickly made a splash with their high-end, custom-made sex toys that are sold for $3,000.
This is where the term fetish comes in.
Fetish, or fetish-based, refers to an item that’s custom-designed and made to satisfy a specific fetish, such as a fetish for large breasts, big boobs, or an interest in big boobs.
These products are typically made of premium materials, including silicone or other non-porous materials, and often come with a hefty price tag.
Some fetish toys are made to be extremely realistic, such that they’re impossible to tell apart from the rest of the sex toys they’re made for.
Some products are more affordable, and many are just extremely realistic.
But while the fetish sex toys market has been growing in popularity, the market for sex toys has been shrinking.
In 2017 alone, the fetish porn industry lost $1.5 billion in the first nine months of the year.
That’s according to a new report by New Pornhub, which analyzed the first quarter of 2018 and found that there were 1.7 million sex toys listed on the site in 2017.
This was down from 1.5 million in 2016, and down from 2.2 million in 2015.
“Fetish porn is now shrinking, and it’s because of a few factors: a decrease in the number of women searching for erotic sex toys and the popularity of online sex retailers,” says Nicole Dickson, the company’s chief marketing officer.
“The decrease in women shopping for fetish porn is directly tied to the fact that many of the top sellers are now smaller companies with niche lines.”
That means the big-name porn companies like Adult Video Alliance and Vivid Entertainment have been able to capitalize on the niche sex toys craze, and the companies have been making deals with niche sex toy retailers to get their products onto the site.
But there are also smaller companies like BangBros, which offers small fetish shops, and Stax, which sells more premium sex toys.
In 2018, these companies had only a fraction of the sales of major porn companies.
While these smaller companies have grown in size over the past few years, they haven’t made much money off of their products.
But now that the industry is on the rise again, many smaller companies are jumping into the market to capitalize.
“I think the bigger porn companies are starting to realize that they can’t continue to be the biggest porn companies, and that they need to start to look at their niche market and start to really start to diversify,” says Rachel McDaniel, a sex toy analyst with Rentrak.
“They need to find niche companies that are willing to build their brands into those niche markets and then really get on top of it.”
The new companies have a couple of options to start their own niche sex shops.
One is to become a sex shop themselves, or hire a staff to do so.
Another is to buy a large, expensive company like Vivid or Adult Video, which have a lot of money at stake.
“It’s going to be a very competitive landscape,” McDaniel says.
“You’re going to see lots of smaller shops opening up in 2018.”
It’s also likely that some of the smaller companies will make money from their niche sex shop sales.
According to New PornHub, the porn industry has lost more than $10 billion since 2014, and some of that was due to people losing their jobs as sex workers.
It’s possible that some smaller companies could make money by selling their products to porn studios.
“That could lead to an influx of smaller brands that are able to start up with an existing staff of designers and artists that already have experience in the industry,” McElwain says.
That said, if a company wants to open up its own sex shop, it needs to have the cash to do it, and for some small businesses, that means a lot more than just a website and a small staff.
“Some of these small businesses that were established on the back of porn and [a] porn star, they’ve grown into a very large company,” McDonald says.
For example, Busty Vixen, which is owned by adult video stars Victoria Justice and Brooke Candy, recently announced that it’s bringing in a new designer to its staff.
McDaniel is also worried about the safety of sex workers, because of the fact they often go undercover.
“If you have a shop that’s been around for years, you know that the workers have been working for years,” she says.
